Understanding Roulette Bets and Odds

If you want to have an easy time winning money inside a casino, then you should go straight to the roulette wheels. As easy as playing roulette is, a keen understanding of roulette odds can go a long way in helping you win and make a profit from the game. Many roulette players neglect to do their homework regarding roulette bets and odds. This is a mistake that you should avoid if you want to win in roulette.

Most roulette players think that betting on either red or black has a 50% chance of winning. However, since there are a total of 38 spaces in a roulette wheel, and 16 spaces each for red and black, then the actual probability is 47.37%. So in the long run, you will lose money if you continue betting on red or black all the time.

There are other roulette bets aside from the color bets (red and black). You can bet on numbers (odd and even), columns and dozens. Betting on odd or even is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is to bet on even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) or odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, etc.).

The column bet is a type of outside bet that pays 2:1. So a 45 column bet pays you $10 if it wins. The column bet is located at the bottom of the roulette table and each column corresponds to a whole column of numbers directly above it. If the ball lands on a number located on the column you are betting on, you win double your bet amount.

The dozens bet is also an outside bet and requires betting on the first dozen (1-12), second dozen (13-24) or third dozen (25-36). You can place a dozen bet by putting your chips on the areas labeled as "1st 12," "2nd 12," or "3rd 12." This bet also has a 2:1 payout rate.

Since roulette bets are pretty easy to understand and follow, you don't need any special skill to win in roulette, just some luck. But if you are really interested in making consistent profits without relying too much on luck, then you should know how to make the most profitable bets.

Some roulette players use the Martingale system as a strategy although this technique has several drawbacks. You should have a very large bankroll if you are planning to use the Martingale system, since the bets can grow to very large amounts.

The Martingale system involves doubling your bet every time you lose. The principle behind this strategy is that a win will more than make up for all your previous losses. But if you continue losing, it will come to the point that you can no longer double your bet because your bankroll is exhausted or you have reached the maximum bet limit.

No matter what bets you choose to play or what strategy you intend to use, keep them to yourself. Other players will follow you if you announce your betting plans and they might blame you if they don't win. Just follow your own intuition and gut feel and bet on what you feel are the lucky bets for you.

There's nothing mysterious about roulette bets and odds. In fact, you don't need to study anything and you can even play the game without any prior experience. But if you know your odds of winning as well as the payout rates for every roulette bet, then you will be in a favorable position to win and make money from the game.
