Roulette: A Spin of Fortune

Gambling is like a spinning wheel of fortune. There are times that gamblers win their bets in manifolds, otherwise, misfortune befall on some other times. Roulette is played on a spinning wheel with colored and numbered pockets with the aid of a ball rolled inside the wheel. Once the ball falls on the pocket where the player place his bet, the player wins the game and paid according to the payout odds set by the banker. The wheel has a slanted surface which controls the roll of the ball inside the wheel. The wheel has two different variations on the number of pockets positioned inside the wheel, the American roulette and European roulette. The American roulette has 38 colored and numbered pockets while the European version has 37 pockets. These pockets are numbered from 1 to 36 alternating with colors of red and black on it. A green pocket is also included in the wheel assigned with the number 0. The American version has a second green pocket with a double 0 on it. Numbers on the pockets have random placements in the wheel for both the American and European roulette.

There are two schemes of placing bets in the roulette, "inside" bets and "outside" bets. Inside bets are done by selecting the number of pocket where the ball will land in. The player will place his bet before the wheel spins and the ball thrown inside the wheel. Outside bets are done by betting on different positional groupings of pockets - both colored and numerical.

Casinos set the payment of different bets won by a player through payout odds. The payout odds are determined by the house based on probabilities favorable to the casino and relative to any bets made on average. This is called the house edge.

Roulette has number of series with special names indicated in the wheel sectors. These special series of the wheel offers different payouts by setting an amount per series or multiples of the mount of bets placed by the player. This is based on the way certain numbers in the roulette lie next to other numbers. Most casinos offer this scheme with additional bets; however, some do not offer this kind of payout.

The game of roulette has been a permanent fixture in most casinos and entertainment locations because of its simple and easy rules applied to the game and the tempting payouts set by the banker. A player's winning moment will be decided by pure luck of having the ball fall into the wagered pocket.
